Beacon policy reminder:

A new avalanche beacon policy has been implemented by ACC National applicable to all ACC Section and National trips as of November 1, 2011. Single antenna analogue beacons will no longer be allowed on any ACC trip. ACC members are encouraged to upgrade avalanche transceivers to digital, three-antenna models. However two-antenna beacons are still acceptable.

Visit the Canadian Avalanche Centre's website to find out why the single antenna beacons are now considered obsolete: http://www.avalanche.ca/cac/gear/obsolete

You can read more about the ACC's transceiver policy at: http://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca/services/safety/#policies

An email was sent to everyone including those on the waiting list on January 23rd.

Meeting Time:

9:30AM on Friday February 3rd. This gives most people the option of driving to Rogers Pass on Friday morning if they wish. For this trip it is required that we all meet at the trailhead rather than depart for the hut at different times.

Meeting Place:

The Asulkan Trailhead parking lot. Located on the south side of the Trans Canada Highway about 3km west of the Rogers Pass Visitors Centre. 300m west of the Illecillewaet summer campground entrance.

Permits:

You will need a Park Pass displayed on your vehicle. Available at the Visitors Center located at the Rogers Pass summit. Open from 7:00AM to 5:00PM. You do not need a Winter Restricted Area Permit. Allow yourself time to get a park permit.

Entire Trip Cancellation Due to Excessive Avalanche Hazard:

ACC Okanagan Section Policy: "The avalanche conditions will be assessed [by the trip leader with group consultation] on the Wednesday [prior to the trip] and should conditions render travel to the hut unsafe, the entire booking will be canceled and participants will receive a refund. Those persons wishing to go to the hut as individuals can contact the ACC on an individual basis and rebook the hut on that date. Individual requests for refunds due to inclement weather and/or marginal conditions will not be granted."

Trip Cancellation by Individuals:

Please, please, please inform the trip leader that you are cancelling! Then make every effort to contact the next person on the waiting list to take your place. The next person on the waiting list is expected to reimburse the hut fees directly to the person canceling. Any financial arrangements made with respect to the hut fees are entirely between the individuals. If you join the trip from the waiting list inform the trip leader so that we know you are coming.

Approach to the Hut:

About 5 hours with overnight packs. ~900m elevation gain. Avalanche hazard.

The ACC requires that the following be communicated:

"Please be advised that these are non-guided trips and the following equipment and a working knowledge of it's use is mandatory for each participant: avalanche beacon, probe, shovel, backcountry touring gear such as alpine skis/touring bindings and skins, similar telemark gear and/or split board/skins."

"There is no legal requirement for trip participants to be ACC members, but non-members are not covered by the ACC's insurance should they be found negligent in causing someone personal injury or property damage/loss. It is strongly recommended that all trip participants become members of the ACC, as this protection is one of the benefits of membership."

More info regarding ACC waiver policy and liability issues can be found at: http://alpineclubofcanada.ca/services/safety/index.html

Waivers:

Waivers must be signed and returned to the trip leader before leaving the trailhead. Waivers can be signed at the trailhead but usually the trip leader will appreciate receiving them in advance. A scanned copy emailed to the trip leader is acceptable. Waivers are available here: http://accokanagan.ca/index.php?page=waivers

Info about the Asulkan Hut:

http://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca/facility/info/AsulkanCabin.pdf

Food:

People usually form food groups of 3-4 for dinners.

Terrain Map:

http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/bc/glacier/visit/visit5/aval/a10a.aspx

Departing the Hut:

Depending on the conditions the group will generally ski out in the early afternoon on Sunday. If you plan to ski out before or after the main group please inform the trip leader. Do your part to clean the hut before leaving and don't assume that someone else will look after it.

Please post questions or concerns, offer a ride, ask for a ride, etc.

I have a four day visit to the Kamloops area coming up Feb 22-25 and would like to do some cross country/back country outside avalanche risk areas. Any suggestions? I have seen the commercial skiing areas of State Lake and Harper Mountain. Are there any other good areas or guide books I should look for? Thanks, EJ

Hi everyone,

I just moved to Kelowna from Thunder Bay and in spite of meeting many rock climbers at the local gym it seems like most aren't interested in ice climbing here. I was hoping to meet some fellow ice climbers and get a few routes in this season! I have all my gear and am confident leading up to wi4/5, depending on the conditions, basically just looking for some climbing partners to get out with. Hope everyone is having a great winter.

The BC gov't is looking for feedback on a proposed legislative act
that would govern "roads utilized by motorized vehicles on Crown
land, and any road on private land that has been authorized by
government.", called the Natural Resource Road Act (NRRA).

"The Natural Resource Road Act Project presents resource road users
with an opportunity to
influence the way resource roads are administered and used in B.C.
Government’s primary
objective is to make improvements over what we have today. Success
depends on informed
policy development. Feedback on this paper is the first step in
providing information to the
project team.
The best way to provide feedback is via the Natural Resource Road Act

It was still dark Sunday at 6am but at least the gray rains of Saturday had subsided. John J, Richard W, Mike G and I piled into the Pfinder and picked up Sue L downtown. As dawn broke we could see that the day was brightening up and a great hike was in store. We headed to the Coquihalla and got to the rest area just east of the Zopkios truck brake-check/washroom at about 830. Our truck would wait here for us to return.

We started heading east along a buried natural gas right-of-way for about 30min then turned northwest and headed into nothing. Nothing but deep, thick alder, twisting willows and thankfully - berry bushes. Every grasp for balance meant a mouthful of sweets. All we knew was the direction was up. Thar was up and that was our objective. It was a full body, aerobic workout - stepping over logs, reaching up for branches, pushing through relentless bushes and getting soaked all the while. This did end however after about an hour. Almost instantly we reached open slopes with the occasional flagging guiding us upward. It was reassuring to find evidence of previous human activity.

We reached the summit of Thar at 1115 and rested while getting our bearings for the next leg of the traverse. The views were expansive with Falls lake below to the north and the granite peaks of Vicuha and Guanaco to the northwest.

We started west toward our next objective - Nak. The route is obvious but still a bit of a bushwack through spruce and fir downward to the col between Thar and Nak. From the col, the hike is directly up a ridge requiring some thoughtful hand and foot placement, but easily achieved. We reached the summit of Nak around 1245. The views west over the Anderson group reveal so many great looking hikes to consider for another day. At the summit of Nak we found a plastic canister containing what I thought was a generously sized "joint", but what actually a somewhat weathered rolled up note. The note has been left by a group of hikers from Hope who had been here about 10 years ago.

We continued our traverse by heading downward again to the low ridge that connects to the granite slabs of Yak. The Yak north face is precipitous and perhaps a great climbing route for those desiring strictly vertical ascents and descents. We crossed a short patch of hard snow to a small bench separating the south peak of Yak from the higher north peak. From this point, it's 10min to the summit which we reached at 1400.
We celebrated our victory over the three peaks and enjoyed a few minutes of 360-degree viewing. The weather was deteriorating though and we knew it would rain before we got down to the vehicle.

The hike down to the highway was well marked though really quite steep. Nice open meadows to start, then steep bushy patches made trickier now that a light misty rain was falling. The south face of Yak has ominous granite slabs that look awesome up close. The trail continues down through large boulder fields and then into a the forest. From this point you can hear traffic on the highway, but you never seem to get any closer to it. Just down, down, down. We encoutered another couple who had disturbed some hornets. Mike and Richard confirmed the pesty presence with each of them receiving stings.

We did eventually pop out of the forest and returned to the Pfinder at 1615. We were back in K-town shortly after 1800.

It was a great hike and many thanks to John J for leading the trip.

Some more info...

The Safety Committee of the Alpine Club of Canada recommends to the Board of Directors the adaptation of the following policy:

• Participants on all mountaineering, skiing and ice climbing trips, camps and courses
of the Alpine Club of Canada in avalanche terrain are required to use a modern
avalanche transceiver, as recommended by the Canadian Avalanche Centre.
Recommended avalanche transceivers are digital, multi-antenna transceivers; analog
and single-antenna transceivers are no longer acceptable. This policy becomes
effective with the winter avalanche season 2011/2012, as of November 1, 2011.

• ACC members are advised to take note of the manufacturer’s recommendations for the
expected useful service life of avalanche transceivers.

• ACC members are encouraged to upgrade avalanche transceivers to digital, three antenna models such as the Tracker 2, Ortovox 3+, Barryvox/ Mammut Pulse, Pieps
DSP…;digital, two-antenna beacons (Tracker DTS, Ortovox X1…) are still acceptable.

• ACC members are also advised that the usefulness of any transceiver depends on the
familiarity of the user with the transceiver. Regular practice throughout the season is
strongly recommended.

Trip plan.

Leave Kelowna 6:00 am, planning to start hiking at 8:30. Google maps estimates about 2 and a quarter hours driving time. Will meet at the home of the person closest to the bridge in Kelowna, who has enough parking, and carpool from there.

Using google earth, the route profile shows about 800 meters of vertical and a little over six kilometers distance. My estimate is about three hours to the top of Thar, part of which will be bushwhacking. From Thar, an hour and a half to Nak, and another hour and a half to Yak. Two hours down to the road, where I hope we have been able to leave a vehicle. That is eight hours. If we have to walk back, that is another three to four kilometers of level walking, an hour and a half. So, ten hours if we have one vehicle, eight if we have two or more.

Clothing and gear should be appropriate to bushwhacking and autumn in the Coast Mountains. Long pants, rain gear, warm layers and maybe tough gloves for the bushwhacking. A helmet is a good idea for the short scramble, if you have one. Further, in case things take longer than expected, everyone should have a light. Footwear appropriate to hiking and scrambling - a pair of sturdy hiking boots in good condition - is a must.

As I'm new at leading a trip like this, I want to keep the group small. I'll limit it to six if I don't know most of the people in the group, and up to eight if I am comfortable with your abilities. As this is autumn and we are sort of racing the sun, I want everyone to have recently done a full day of hiking/scrambling.

Another last minute trip. Weekend plans fell through, so posted to forum to look for anyone available to get out for a day. Dave Henwood responded, and we decided to head to the Coquihalla area to go up Vicuna and Guanaco summits, at the head of Coldwater River.

Left Kelowna at about 6:30. The access road turned into several kilometers of alder carwash at the end. This meant that the drive from Kelowna to the trailhead took almost three hours.

The hike starts by following an old logging road, until an obvious sign marking the trail can be seen on the uphill side of the road. Well, maybe not quite so obvious, at least not to us. We stormed straight past it, and carried on until the the road turned into a cow track along a wet and mossy piece of granite that ATVs wouldn't even try. So, turned back. Spooked a fat black bear before finally wandering back to the start of the trail, which was nicely marked by several pieces of flagging, a bridge with pieces of 2x4 nailed to some logs, and a large sign on a rock.

Trail ascends pretty steeply uphill. Overall it is a good trail that has been maintained - most logs cut - quite well. However, when the trail emerges from the forest into a series of muddy meadows, it isn't quite so well maintained. From the meadows, the trail ascends through boulders below the slabs of Vicuna, crossing to the north and up to the col between Vicuna and Guanaco. In this open area the trail is a 'pick your cairn' path, as there seem to be many cairns and flags, without them marking any obvious path.

The col is easy to attain, and presents a very nice view of the Anderson group, and coast mountains off in the distance. Vicuna is dominant to the south, its narrow ridge falling steeply on each side. After a quick food break, we headed up. Most of the ridge was an easy walk or scramble, but for one crux. This piece is perhaps ten meters long. The line follows a crack up a narrow rock, falling off to each side. The crack and the rock around offers little in the way of handholds, although the rock is rough and boots jam into the crack well. Someone has put a bolt in, with a piece of chain and a length of cable. These were a minor aid on the way up, but a significant aid on the way down (at least for this climber).

From this crux up, the route was pretty easy and direct. The next most challenging part was a long, gentle crack up a large, gently sloping slab covered with lichen. The lichen was dry, and one could probably have walked right up it, but it didn't give the nicest feel. Were the summit in the clouds or being rained on, this slab would have been a quick slide to a nice, long drop. The summit itself was very spacious, and afforded nice views all around. Baker, the Cheam ridge, the Anderson group, Coast mountains to the west, and Cascades to the south.

The decent followed the same route as the ascent. A couple of spots required careful lowering over edges with feet out of sight. The last little bit of the decent to the chain and cable, and then down, was probably the most challenging. Below that, it was an easy walk. We continued up to the top of Guanaco, where we had a nice, relaxed lunch, before descending.

Total time, six hours, including unplanned detour.
